hello. i'm jennifer gilbert. police step up patrols as they continue to search for those responsible for the deadly shooting in waverly. the shooting happened in broad daylight. myranda stephens has more on the response from police and why it's drawing criticism from some residents. >> they should be here on patrol on a regular basis. >>reporter: they were there at every turn. police officers driving in cars and standing on sidewalks, all in response to recent violence in north baltimore. >> unfortunately, it's not like unusual to hear there's been a shooting or stabbing. >>reporter: on saturday, a 22-year old man was gunned down in broad daylight near this gas station at the corner. just last wednesday night, a 72-year old man was shoot and killed during an attempted robbery just a few blocks away. police are now beefing up patrols in the community.

>> it does have the effect of at least, you know, chasing him off and not making it as conducive for individuals who are up to no good to hang out. >>reporter: some folks say they're not impressed. they want to see a heavy police presence every day. >> it's like after a shooting, it's just like for show. >> i feel they should take a more proactive approach to stopping crime in the neighborhood. >>reporter: the city police commissioner says his office has been proactive, adding there's more to fighting crime than what meets the eye. like being involved in programs like this, the first recreational lacrosse league for inner-city youth. >> they may not be out there wrestling guns from guys, but mentoring 12-year old boys from troubled neighborhoods arou's f the city, that's work. >>reporter: it appears they won't accident be alone. >> i believe more eyes on the

street makes a difference. i will be out more because i believe it's important that we do that. >>reporter: in north baltimore, myranda stephens, fox 45 news at 10:00. >> police describe the suspects in yesterday's shooting as two black males in their 20s. investigators have not identified the victim yet. meanwhile, city police are also investigating a homicide in northwest baltimore. police found the body of a man in the alley. he had been shot. no suspects or a motive in that case. a double shooting leaves one woman dead in prince george's county. it happened in a parking lot around 2:00 a.m. police say the 32-year old and a 33-year old man were shot. police believe the shooting was connected to a dispute between the male victim and the gunman. the man shot was taken to the hospital. he is expected to be okay. new information in the

november homicide of a youth leader. it turns out the shooting was apparently connected to a dispute over a dog. police say angelo dangerfield was walking his dog when another resident yelled to keep the dog away from him. witnesses say dangerfield said the dog was harmless and seconds later they heard gunfire and dangerfield collapsed to the ground. police made one arrest in the case on friday. they are still searching for another suspect believed to be the gunman. a white powder found in an envelope at a census-processing center turns out to be harmless. one person was taken to the hospital to be treated for anxiety related to the incident yesterday. this is the second time in a month this has happened at the same facility. no word on exactly what the substance was. the mayor will release her plans on how to fix baltimore city's big budget woes tomorrow. initial plans call for more than half of the city's wreck centers to be shut

down. more than 600 layoffs and big cuts to the police and fire departments. despite threats to the air marine and mountain units, baltimore's police commissioner is still sounding positive. >> i'm optimistic we're going to get the resources we need. maybe not all, but we're going to get a lot of the resources we need to make us whole. >> the city is facing a $120 million deficit. tomorrow is do-or-die for any bills working their way through the state senate and house of delegates. the 2010 legislative session in annapolis comes to a close at midnight tomorrow night. yesterday lawmakers held a saturday session. they finally enacted the governor's budget. several bills dealing with sex offenders, drunk drivers and hangs are in limbo. >> there's a lot of things coming down to the wire. i'm concerned about foreclosure prevention, giving the homeowner the right to bring these giants to the table before they can be thrown out of their home in a foreclosure

action. >> yesterday the senate did okay a bill to legalize medical marijuana, but the house wants to study the issue more. the measure will probably fail since the session is over tomorrow night. a carroll county mother is questioning state law after a drunk driver killed her daughter, who will barely spend time behind bars. melinda roeder is live with details on this murder. >>reporter: this was not the first time kevin smith got behind the wheel drunk, but on july 19th, his decision to drive caused the teenage girl her life. the mother wants justice. >> my daughter was killed by a drunk driver and he's totally gotten away with it. >>reporter: linda is still grieving the loss of her only daughter, 15-year old caitlyn was killed last july outside her house. she was standing near a car parked by the highway, when a drunk driver veered off the road. >> kevin smith took so much

away from my life. i'll never see her at a prom or wedding or graduate high school. >>reporter: the driver, kevin smith, pleaded guilty last week to negligent manslaughter and driving under the influence. his sentence? 18 months in jail. a penalty she believes is far from just. >> first of all, it's ridiculous to me that if you kill somebody under the influence of alcohol, it's a non-violent crime. how can that be a non-violent crime? somebody's dead. >>reporter: she's calling on statelawmakers to change sentencing guidelines. she said too many criminals don't spend enough time behind bars. >> people need to get upset about laws when it comes to laws like this. >>reporter: ever since the accident, she keeps thinking about her daughter and how it could have been prevented. >> he had choices that night. he could have stayed home. he could have got somebody to drive him home. he could have slept in his truck. he had choices before he decided to get behind the wheel and drive.

thousands of people line the streets in poland to pay tribute to their president. he was among 96 people killed after a plane crashed in western russia yesterday. amy kellogg has the latest tonight. >>reporter: tens of thousands of people lined the streets

mourning the death of president lech kaczynski. some singing the country's national anthem. others tossing flowers it's the hurst carrying the late president. the road up to the presidential palace has become a shrine, memorializing his leader, wife and other dignitaries who lost their lives in the plane crash. flowers -- hundreds gathered at noon to two minutes of silence. some mourners are trying to emphasize poland's strength and stability. >> it will not affect us in terms of any political organization -- well organized. we have a constitution that is in place. the country will run -- but it sucks for everyone. reporter: from germany, to france and israel, people are expressing condolences to the polish

so you said you got out on the trail special enjoyed this great weather? >> yeah. >> did you go all the way to pennsylvania? >> not that far. did about 22 miles. >> not that bad. >> it was packed. there was a lot of folks today. perfect day to get out and hopefully you get a chance to enjoy the weather tomorrow. a little bit of a cooldown compared to what we saw today. looks like we are seeing a few high, thin clouds over the area. looks like we're going to continue to see temperatures going down a little bit as we continue to see the cold front push on through. we'll see temperatures go down just a bit, but not bad. 60 degrees. winds are calm. humidity levels at 47 percent. looks like we'll see plenty of sunshine tomorrow. pretty decent day on tap as we continue to see more warm air. not as warm as what we saw today. 76 was the high today.

normally we should be at 63 so you can see our temperatures are above normal. lows at 38 this morning. record high 85 degrees back in 1887. long time ago. we are not going to get that warm for a little while here. 79 degrees for the high in the inner harbor. 76 in d.c. 78 in hagerstown. oakland, 63 degrees. a pretty good day all across the state. currently we're sitting in 50s and 60s to the west. we'll continue to see things cool off. not a lot of moisture associated with that. 65 in harrisburg. 59 in pittsburgh. 49 in cleveland. that cooler air coming in from the lake as cucontinue to see a little of that frontal boundary pushing through helping spark off a few showers through the northeast. mainly dry conditions. you can see how this will continue to clear out making way for plenty of sunshine tomorrow. we'll see enjoy sunshine for the first part of the work week. there's a weather disturbance

gunfire rocks new orleans last night. seven people shot outside of a mcdonald's near the french quarter. it happened around 9:00 as a festival was wrapping up. police are searching for two gunmen. investigators believe six of the seven shooting victims were innocent by standards. they are expected to surviechlt the intended victim, a 17-year old is the most seriously hurt. he was shot in the chest. police say the shooting was a result of a dispute that dates back to marmar martin luther kin

marty graf. texas stadium was taken down in grand style. fire works were launched before the countdown to the explosions. an 11-year old boy, who won an essay contest, was given the honor of pushing the button that triggered the imexplosion. the hot air may belet out for high-flying balloons. the popular tourist attraction could be grounded by the city. officials say the operators often land on city property and cause a whole lot of damage along the way. the city has already issued citations. negotiations are in the work to keep the balloons flying high. more than 300 hot air balloons take off from san diego each year.
